Intent
At Leafield C.E. Primary School, the teaching of writing is of paramount importance within a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that every child within our school leaves us as a competent, independent writer, with an understanding of the conventions of Standard English and when to use it effectively.
This ability to write with confidence for a range of purposes and audiences ensures that children leave Leafield fully prepared for their secondary education, enabling them to access the curriculum in KS3.
The writing curriculum at Leafield encourages children to immerse themselves in different text types, linked to high-quality texts, understand the features and impact of these, and realise the importance of them beyond education.
A secure knowledge of spelling and grammar and an understanding of how to edit writing is taught throughout the school in a systematic and progressive way. The content of writing lessons is planned to build on children’s previous knowledge as well as introduce new learning. We want our children to leave Leafield with a deep understanding of different text types and a love for creative writing.
Implementation
- To plan carefully sequenced lessons for each genre and promote the use of writing across the curriculum.
- To provide access to quality first teaching which is engaging and purposeful and ensure teachers have high aspirations of every pupil.
- To incorporate speaking and listening National Curriculum objectives into planning to ensure full coverage of the English Curriculum and provide a range of opportunities to demonstrate their skills.
- To provide GPS lessons related to the genre of work being taught and ensure these progresses through each year group.
- To plan well-structured lessons which build upon previous knowledge and understanding and have a clear progression, structure, and outcome.
- To allow opportunities for our children to publish and shared their finished pieces of writing.
- To carefully monitor and evaluate all children’s work so that all children make progress and reach their full potential and to identify early those children who may be struggling with writing and put in the necessary additional support to help them.
Impact
The impact of our writing curriculum will be measured through:
- The subject lead ensures that the National Curriculum requirements are met.
- Pupil outcomes are monitored through pupil voice interviews; book scrutinies; drop- ins, discussions with staff etc.
- Assessing children’s understanding of grammatical vocabulary and application.
- Summative assessment in the form of a ‘free write’ (3 x per year).
- Moderation and scrutiny of pupil’s books and professional dialogue between teachers to assess the quality of children’s learning.
- Sharing good practice amongst staff.
- Marking of written work in books is against the school’s feedback policy.
- The writing lead identifies clear next steps, which are determined by a cycle of monitoring, evaluating, and reviewing.
- Teacher assessment of writing using independently written pieces to provide evidence of national curriculum skills and understanding.
- Monitoring of progress from year to year, ensuring pupils remain ‘on track’ from their starting point.
- Identifying those that need additional support and putting additional measures in place.
