What does it look like in EYFS?

In Early Years, children are given opportunities to join in with music in groups, as a class and independently. This includes daily singing, musical instruments in Continuous Provision and listening to different styles of music. During PE sessions, children listen to and compare musical genres and respond to them by creating dances and sequences of movements. Children explore rhythm and repeating patterns in musical sequences and have access to a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments to create their own music.

These contexts enable children to develop the skills to be able to:

  • Listen attentively, move to and talk about music, expressing their feelings and responses.
  • Watch and talk about dance and performance art, expressing their feelings and responses

  • Sing in a group or on their own, increasingly matching the pitch and following the melody.

  • Explore and engage in music making and dance, performing solo or in groups.
