What does it look like in Reception?

In Reception, children are encouraged to be active throughout the day. They have continuous access to an outdoor area with equipment for developing and refining gross motor skills, including balance, co-ordination and core strength. In addition, time is spent daily in the large playground, with opportunities for group games and playing with equipment such as balls, skipping ropes, balance boards and scooters.  

Children also have a weekly PE lesson and throughout the year are taught dance, gymnastics and multi-skills (including ball skills and moving in different ways with control).  

In addition, there are weekly outdoor learning sessions, which provide further opportunities to develop physical skills, including moving with control, balancing and climbing. 

These contexts enable children to develop the skills to be able to: 

  • Revise and refine the fundamental movement skills they have already acquired: - rolling - crawling - walking - jumping - running - hopping - skipping - climbing  
  • Progress towards a more fluent style of moving, with developing control and grace.  

  • Develop the overall body strength, co-ordination, balance and agility needed to engage successfully in future physical education sessions and other physical disciplines, including dance, gymnastics, sport and swimming.  

  • Use their core muscle strength to achieve a good posture when sitting at a table or sitting on the floor.  

  • Combine different movements with ease and fluency
