Governors

Leafield School is supported by our Local Governing Body.  Our Governors meet regularly to discuss the school’s continuing development and aim to ensure the pupils can achieve to the best of their ability. The Governors work with the School’s Senior Leadership Team and our Multi Academy Trust – Oxford Diocesan Schools Trust (ODST).

The Local Governing Body (LGB) has three core functions:

  • helping the school with its strategy;
  • holding the Executive Headteacher to account for the school’s performance; and
  • making sure the school budget is properly managed.

If you would like to contact the Governors, you can do so either via the school office, or by emailing Sarah Harston, Chair of Governors (chair@leafield.oxon.sch.uk).

Our Governors

Sarah Harston – Chair of Governors (chair@leafield.oxon.sch.uk)

I became a governor at Leafield School in 2020.  I live in Leafield village and my children have all attended the school.  My youngest child is still a pupil.

My background is in Human Resources. In my early career, I worked as a management consultant, assisting companies with remuneration of employees. I then worked in-house for large global corporate organisations, developing reward strategies, HR policy and employee relations.

Since leaving my HR career in 2018, I have been retraining in horticulture. I now work in Garden Design.

I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to be a governor.  I'm sure that, as a team, we will continue to help to improve an already successful school.

Ellie Jenkins – Vice Chair of Governors and Safeguarding lead (safeguarding@leafield.oxon.sch.uk)

I joined the governing body in 2017 when I moved to the village.

I am responsible for safeguarding at Leafield Primary School, and I have a particular interest in the Early Years.

I am a qualified teacher with lots of experience of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. I am the Early Years lead at another local, rural primary school, which enables me to have a good insight into both the strengths and challenges of a small school.

I have loved being a part of Leafield’s journey so far and look forward to working together to make things even better for our pupils and the wider school community.

Hannah Bailey – Foundation Governor

Hannah has a BSc in Exercise Physiology and a background working with the Cambridge Officer Training Corps for the British Army.

As a Foundation Governor for Leafield, Hannah’s Christian faith is a key driver for challenging the schools' integrity and ethics.

She is also the Link Governor for PE.

Hannah's drive to be grounded in nature and her passion for health and fitness means she is often out climbing, tabbing or somewhere on the water. She is currently working with the Christian charity Adventure Plus, and starting her business in Health and Fitness.

Lisa Bedlow – Community Governor

As a former teacher and head teacher, I have had a wealth of experience with a wide range of children with SEN. I am delighted to take on the role of SEND Governor at Leafield Primary. It is a passion of mine to ensure that all children have an opportunity to thrive and shine.

Jodie Clatworthy - Parent Governor

Hello, my name is Jodie Clatworthy and I have been a Parent Governor since Nov ’24. I am really looking forward to getting to grips with the role and hopefully supporting the school to excel.

I have 2 children - Olly is Yr 6 at Leafield and Immy attended Leafield but is currently doing her GCSE’s at Burford.

I think Leafield is a wonderful school. One of the things that I really love about the school is that they work with the children to prepare them for life, not just their next academic adventure.

I am currently the Manager of Leafield Preschool so work very closely with the Primary School to support the children to transition into Reception. I am SENCO and Designated safeguarding lead at Preschool, so I hope to bring some knowledge of these areas with me. I hope that some of the skills I have developed as the Preschool Manager will be of use to the Governor role.

Katie Gough – Staff Governor

I am a Teaching Assistant here at Leafield School and I became a Staff Governor in November 2023. Having lived in the village for almost a decade, and with both of my children attending here, I have a vested interest in the school. My roles here as a parent, a member of staff and a Governor, allow me the opportunity to continue providing a caring and nurturing environment for the children in our wonderful community.

Prior to working in schools, I worked in the Retail sector, gaining a variety of skills and experience from roles in Insurance and Risk Management and most recently as a Buyer.

I’m extremely proud to call Leafield my home and feel honoured to be afforded the opportunity to be a Governor here.

Janey Petterson – Foundation Governor

Janey Petterson

Janey is a photographer and ceramicist. She designs and leads retreat days using clay as a medium to capture the essence of a chosen spiritual theme: unity, freedom and so on. She is involved with the Leafield Light Services and also worships at Burford Church. In her time, Janey has directed drama and choreographed worship dance. At the Primary School she leads a team of local folk acting out Bible Stories for and with the children. This is a Bible Society project and goes under the name of Open the Book. The children love it!!

Jeremy Russ – Co-Opted Governor

Jeremy joined the Governing Body in mid 2020 as a Community Governor, and supports the finance and pay committees. Following the expiry of that 4-year term, the Directors (Trustees) of ODST appointed him as a co-opted Governor for a further 2 years. His connection to the School and Village spans many decades.

Jeremy has had a working career focussing upon compliance, risk and governance in multi-jurisdictional Private Equity portfolio businesses and most recently in the UK Mutual Financial Services sector. He has been a member of, and Chaired, the Village Parish Council.

He is interested in ensuring that children go to school in an environment that is safe and supportive whilst encouraging confidence and independent thought.

Hannah Saxel – Parent Governor

I was elected parent governor in October 2023 and am delighted to have the opportunity to help support this wonderful school.

I have worked with many small and medium sized businesses and their owners as an accountant and business adviser for over 15 years.  Now working with the board internally, my skillset includes strategic decision making and resource management along with interpreting financial, contractual and legal documents.

I have two children who have both attended the school.  My eldest attended Leafield throughout his primary school years and my youngest is in KS2.

Jeanette Shaw – Community Governor

I am a retired teacher and school leader. I spent 41 years in education, mainly in secondary schools. The last 20 years of my career was in leadership in challenging urban schools. My last paid role was that of Senior Vice Principal in a school of over 1200 students. I have also worked as a consultant, helping schools to solve entrenched problems and raise the attainment of children. I have been a Vice Chair of Governors to a large primary school in Milton Keynes. I am passionately interested in primary education, particularly in overcoming disadvantage, literacy and the development of writing.

I live locally in Charlbury. have three daughters, one who is a Deputy Head of a primary school in Essex, and four grandchildren. I want the experience of the children at Leafield to be one that I would want for my grandchildren, one where learning is exciting and a gateway to other worlds.
